Chin Surgery: Genioplasty or Mentoplasty

Genioplasty will harmonize the face but cannot correct a "gummy smile" and absence of lip seal in the dentofacial anatomy.

Different techniques can be reviewed:

  • Chin implant or prosthesis. This is indicated when there is no anomaly in the vertical dimension.
  • Appositions: cartilage, etc: in order to enhance a rhinoplasty.
  • Fillers, fat grafts : short-lived and limited indications.
  • Genioplasty (chin surgery): the most logical solution.

Genioplasty: the most logical type of osteotomy

Which gives best facial results.

This technique allows freedom of action in the vertical dimension of the chin as there is almost always an anomaly in that dimension.

  • Offering results that cannot be achieved with an other technique.
  • And enables significant advancement and retraction.

It takes into account the entire skin-cervico-mental muscles-bone complex.

Gives excellent stable outcome over time.

The 1st consultation for genioplasty is important as only the surgeon can give you guidance:

  • A discrepancy between the bony bases (dental occlusion) is an orthodontic or ortho-surgical indication (upper or lower jaw).
  • In other cases, compromise surgery will be required to enhance the facial esthetics but without correcting any possible dentofacial anomaly.
